Signs of Aging, Even in the Embryo Empty Signs of Aging, Even in the Embryo

In 1961, two biologists named Leonard Hayflick and Paul Moorehead discovered that old age is built into our cells. At the time, many scientists believed that if healthy human cells were put in a flask with a steady supply of nutrients, they would multiply forever. But when Dr. Hayflick and Dr. Moorehead reared fetal human cells, that’s not what they found. Time and again, their cells would divide about 50 times and then simply stop.

didge, I may have got it wrong but if cells die off as you get older what about brain cells? up to a point,. the older you get the more intelligence you gather ,then I suppose you reach a point when the cells start to die off then you get like us old un's ,a bit doolally.

Really have no idea on that to be honest Nicko, but you could be right, is not a subject I have much knowledge on to be honest, though find it very interesting.

So that's why they're born bald! Seriously though, very interesting stuff. These senescent cells (the ones that cause aging) are in both babies and old people. Have you ever looked at a newborn and thought they seem to be looking back at you with the eyes and face of an old person who thinks "where the f**k am I?" - life really does seem to be a never-ending circle.

Interesting Tess, as I have read some articles on babies in the womb that even then start to learn things like maths, which baffles me. Many things clearly we do not understand about, will have to try and find that article for you, though cant remember which site  head bang

Nicko....apparently brain cells start to die off in your twenties, but it is an extremely gradual degradation.
