Key figures from the worlds of entertainment, sport, politics, the media and the military are backing a call for more to be done to tackle mental illness in the UK.

Film director Danny Boyle, screenwriter Richard Curtis, Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew and General Sir Peter Wall, former head of the British Army and president of Combat Stress, are the latest names to back the Equality for Mental Health Campaign.

More than 200 people have now signed an open letter to the Government calling for greater help. It comes help within days of the campaign's launch by Lib Dem former mental health minister Norman Lamb, Time to Change ambassador and former Labour government communications director Alastair Campbell, and former Conservative cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell.  Boyle said he had "no hesitation" in signing up to the campaign stating: "For too long mental health and mental illness have been surrounded by stigma and taboo and I will support anything that strips that away.

aith leaders including the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Dr Shuja Shafi of the Muslim Council of Britain are among the signatories, along with singer Annie Lennox, screenwriter Jimmy McGovern, presenter Graham Norton, comedian Ruby Wax and actress Emma Thompson.

High-profile business figures including architect Lord Richard Rogers, Sir Martin Sorrell and Delia Smith have pledged their support along with Falklands hero Simon Weston and classicist Mary Beard.

Former rower Sir Steve Redgrave, along with ex-cricketers Marcus Trescothick, Graeme Fowler and Mike Brearley and singer Frankie Bridge are also among the signatories.  Mr Lamb, Mr Campbell and Mr Mitchell have each had their own or family mental health issues.
Mr Lamb said: "People with mental health problems have always been seen as second class citizens. It's an historic injustice which has to end."

What do they want the Government to do about it? A lot of people complain because medications are used for mental health issues, but if they weren't used, they'd still moan and say that nothing is being done. People moan that they don't want medication, they'd rather go on disability benefits instead - which they do get. Most employers are perfectly understanding about it, unless someone can't do their job for years on end, in which case they're never going to be able to do it.

Imagine if you had to wait over two years to see a specialist about cancer?

They need to specify what kind of mental health problems they're talking about. For the common kind, people just go to their GP - there's no waiting.

More than half of all GP's are not trained in mental health.

Common as in there's a lot of it about - the usual depression or anxiety thing. Of course they don't generally hand out Valium these days because a lot of people misused it. There are tons of drugs around to treat depression though, and you don't have to wait two years to get those. In fact, some people complain that they're handed out too easily.

Maybe there would be less of it about if people weren't so weighed down with the current problems - can they ever get a reasonably paying job so they can get on with life, get a house, maybe get a car to get them to that job, in other words feel as though they are worth something and have a future to look forward to. The realisation that no one (except family and friends) rate you as anything but a number, a commodity, no job tough, no money tough, but money and jobs can be found for the favoured few, or handed over to unelected
troughers to spend on nothing meaningful while they preene themselves and each other senseless in their ivory towers, then ask for even more tax payers money.

mental health is of course a problem for some,and needs to be addressed, but as usual the road to hell is paved with good intentions and as usual the fucking liberals and lefties will abuse this good intention.

we will soon see the victims coming out of the woodwork and claiming mental health when in reality they just need a good slap and a kick up the arse.

this will be thrown down as a blanket coverall under which the lazy and the useless will quickly scurry in order to avoid dealing with real life, cliaming special status and seat in first class on the gravy train.

instead this should be focused to asses and address genuine mental health problems, but it wont be, and mark my words the UK will suddenly see a spike in mental health cases

which basically translates into "mental health problems are now fashion accessory" becaseu thats what happens when taboos are stripped away, i mean for gods sakes if doctors are not properly trained then i doubt that danny boyle is the expert on the subject.

the genuine sufferers will be kicked into the long grass and suffer a degraded quality of care as a result of this

I don't think that mental health issues are taboo any more. People talk about them quite openly. Once again, they need to specify what they're talking about.

i agree

"mental health" is a blanket term that helps no one because its so generic, and of course removing any taboo isnt suddenly going to make people who do suffer come out as the life and soul of the party sharing their problems with one and all

any taboos isnt forcing people to be quite and removing these taboos wont force them to be open about it either

It could mean Schizophrenia, other psychoses, neurosis in general, depression, anxiety, OCD, addiction of one sort or another, Asperger's, Autism, dementia, PTSD, ADHD, Tourettes, any one of the "personality disorders", etc, etc.
