I am a big science fiction fan and also some fantasy.
If you like epic series I can recommend the honor harrington books. sometimes known as the honorverse series.
david Weber is a good writer IMO. he does space battles exceedingly well and really creates a real universe.

the first several are available for free at the baen free library http://www.baen.com/library/defaultTitles.htm

lots of different formats. and a good selection of other free books too.

I like books about WW2 although I've got quite interested in books about the "troubles"in NI just lately. i'm also a big fan of crime fiction.........Engleby by Sebastian Faulks was a good read.

I think some escapism is good for the mind. though I do prefer even sci fi to have a hint of realism...Smile

Mainly non-fiction, especially european history from the 16th-early 20th century with emphasis on France, Germany, Russia, and the UK.] , WW2, biographies of political or cultural icons. But I do like my agatha christies, ruth rendells and pd james. Just about to finish a book on Madame de Pompadour and looking forward to reading Robert Massie's Catherine the Great, Alison Weir's Mary Boleyn, Arguably Essays by Christopher Hitchens, and Ostkrieg:Hitler's War of Extermination in the East thanks to family pressies on amazon.

Cannot stand sci-fi and westerns ugh - sorry.

try the 1632 or ring of fire series. It combines history with a touch of sci fi in that an small american town gets sent back through time to germany in the middle of the 100 years war and the effects they have on the history of the time. Initially it started out as a single title but has now developed into a whole series written by a variety of writers. In my opinion a couple are a little heavy on the historical side and not enough on the action, but I am on my 9th one now and only the first 2 were free. lol!

It deals with the germanies, france, italy, sweden , denmark and now is moving east into poland.
Many of the characters were real people.

I found that site a bit like heroin dealers, they let you have the first fix or two free then it's $6 a book .lol! I am now buying at least 1 sometimes 2 a month now.

its an interesting premise though, how would 17th century europe fare if a 21st century small american town was dumped in the middle of them.

they have it all though, romance, intrigue and action.

If there is any chick lit in it, i reserve the right to swear at you lol!

as regards amazon, yeah i know, but i try and limit myself and luckily i have a good library to use. What i tend to do is write down a list of books that i want to read and will buy only the ones that i really really really want and then wait to buy them from the marketplace as they are a lot cheaper. I rarely buy brand new hardbacks unless i know i can't live without it!
