A MAN who raped and sexually abused a girl when he was 14 will not go to jail.
Daniel Poole of Street, 31, and was told going to prison for crimes he committed as a teen in 1999 would have a "questionable" benefit to society.
Judge David Ticehurst said the case was unique after Poole admitted one charge of rape, four charges of indecent activity with a child and one of indecent assault.
Rob Hall, prosecuting, said: "The victim described how the activity started with games and soon became sexual. He made her believe it was normal.

Great Yarmouth man given 24 year jail sentence for raping three children.
A 37-year-old man who sexually abused children has been jailed for 24 years.
Craig McCabe, of Albany Road, Great Yarmouth, appeared at Norwich Crown Court for sentencing today.
He had previously pleaded guilty to 11 offences; nine counts of rape and two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity committed between 2011 and 2016.
Detective Sergeant Stacey Murray, from the Child Abuse Investigation Unit, which led the enquiry, said: “This was a horrendous case and the sentence imposed demonstrates this. I hope it provides some closure to the victims.
“We hope such a result will help to reassure victims that we will always investigate any allegations of sexual abuse thoroughly and as a consequence bring offenders to justice.”
McCabe was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.

A pervert groomed two 14-year-old schoolgirls on Facebook, having sex with one of them while the other was pregnant with his child.
Sick Daniel Thomas, 24, has been jailed for 10 years after pestering the girls on social media to share naked selfie pictures and having sex with them both.
A court heard he then went on to have sex with the schoolgirls despite a formal warning from police to stay away.
Prosecutor Craig Jones said: “He befriended and had sexual intercourse with both children.
“One girl’s mother tried to stop contact between them. Police issued an abduction notice, which forbade Thomas from having more contact with her daughter.
“But this man had impregnated her and she underwent a termination at hospital.”
Thomas invited the second girl to his house in Llandrindod Wells, Wales, around the same time the first girl was having her termination.
Mr Jones said: “They smoked cannabis together. She began to feel tired. It was then that they started touching and then had sexual intercourse.”
Thomas was arrested in November 2015 in relation to the first schoolgirl but denied the sexual relationship.
He was again arrested in the December when allegations about the second girl came to light, which he again denied.
Cardiff Crown Court heard police found 17 indecent images of one of the girls in “various stages of undress” in a computer folder named “well well”.
He pleaded guilty before his trial to seven counts of sexual activity with a child, inciting a child to engage in sexual intercourse, possession indecent photographs of a child and possession of cannabis.
Judge Thomas Crowther QC said Thomas had been arrested over a “very similar scenario” with another teenager just weeks before he met the two 14-year-old girls.
Judge Crowther told Thomas: “You had effectively been warned off, but you simply continued thinking only of yourself and your pleasure.
“Whatever your level of maturity, you have an adult sexual appetite.”
Thomas was jailed for 10 years, and given restraining orders against his two victims as well as a sexual harm prevention order.

Police have arrested three former members of staff at a top boarding school on suspicion of historic sex abuse against pupils, including the alleged rape of a girl.
The men, all aged in their 60s, were arrested in an investigation into historic alleged assaults at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, West Sussex.
The alleged attacks on as many as nine pupils are all said to have taken place at the prestigious school in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Christ’s Hospital charges boarders up to £31,500 a year and counts Sir Barnes Wallis, inventor of the bouncing bomb, and poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge among its former pupils.

A brave young woman trapped a sex attacker by secretly recording her ordeal on her mobile phone.
Computer sciences student Peter Odukoya, 27, was jailed after police heard the woman, 20, pleading: 'I don't want this. I'm very drunk'.
Cardiff Crown Court heard Odukoya offered the 20-year-old a lift home with friends on a girls night out after she recognised him from the same university.
He dropped the other friends off first - and headed back to his own flat with the drunken young woman.
But her 'instincts kicked in' in the car and turned on her phone's recording app.
Her phone recorded her pleas for him to stop saying 'Please, I have a boyfriend' and 'I don't want this. I'm very drunk'.
The court heard how he sexually assaulted her after she slumped on his settee despite her pleas.
She managed to push him off and lock herself in his bathroom, before ringing a friend to pick her up.
The girl later gave the disturbing recordings to police, and Odukoya was found guilty of sexual assault at Cardiff Crown Court.
Harry Baker, prosecuting, told the court: 'She was left humiliated. It affected her grades.
'She says 'it completely took my dignity away'.'
Andrew Davies, defending, said Odukoya had been suspended from his computer sciences course after the sex assault.

A St Leonards man was jailed for 11 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a girl over a 10-year period. Christopher Cushman was convicted of 20 counts of sexual abuse before being sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on November 18. The 64-year-old man, who lived in Ferry Road, Rye, at the time of the offences, but has since moved to Marina in St Leonards, stood trial in October and found guilty of the string of offences which took place between 2005 and 2015 with a girl known to him. Detective Constable Anton Affonso said: “Cushman subjected the victim to many years of sexual abuse. “Thankfully she gained the courage to report his behaviour and we able to assist her to bring him to justice. “Cushman’s behaviour was totally unacceptable but I am pleased he has been punished.” Cushman was convicted of; two counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, five counts of assault by penetration, eight counts of sexual assault, two counts of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual assault of a child under 13 and causing a child to watch a sexual act. The victim, now a woman in her 20s, reported what had happened to her in 2014.

Dean Whittaker, 19, sexually abused the girl of primary school age by using children’s games in which he played a zombie and a murderer in a darkened room as cover, York Crown Court heard.
He also played “schools” with her, where he had the role of headteacher and she was a pupil and had to come to him in a private room.
The child, to whom he is not related, told the jury he bribed her with promises of computer game software for her mobile phone to take part in the sexual activities, and told her not to tell anyone because he would go to prison if she did.
She kept silence until she heard a conversation during a car journey in which adults said “bad” secrets should not be kept secret.
Whittaker, of West Lutton, near Malton, broke his hand by punching a wall in frustration as he was taken to the court cells following his convictions.

But he was found guilty of eight rape charges and a serious sexual offence, dating back to the early nineties. He was cleared of nine other sex charges. Mr Burke, has now been remanded in custody and faces sentence on December 15. His knees buckled and he reeled in the dock, pressing on the glass barrier for support, as the guilty verdicts were returned.
The first victim said she was a child whe Burke raped her and gave a graphic account of the alleged abuse in a video interview played in court.
Asked how it had affected her by the interviewer, she said: “I can’t trust anyone. I have suffered anxiety the majority of my adult life and it’s been horrendous. I didn’t sleep properly for years, every night there would be flashbacks or a nightmare. I’m at the swimming baths and I’m convinced every man is a paedo. I have had a complete breakdown. I will never love properly. I will never let anyone in - it’s horrible.”
Burke claimed the allegations against him were a ‘conspiracy’ - and his barrister, Nigel Power QC, accused the first complainant of seeking attention. But she told jurors she had had a ‘horrendous life’ and only wanted ‘justice’, before breaking down in tears.
“With all due respect I don’t want to be sat here”, she said. “I don’t want anyone to know this. One thing I do know is that there should be justice and what he did was wrong, and my life has been hell because of what he’s done.”
