Should they get it?
Should British ex-pats in places like Cyprus and Spain receive the winter fuel allowance (they currently do)?

Tricky one. They will all have paid into the system so are rightfully entitled but in our present economic climate I think no.

If they have worked all their days and paid into the system, then yes I think they should receive the payment.
Why not, they would still receive it if they lived in the UK, and some pensioners only live abroad for part of the year.

The money is needed to feed and house asylum seekers who have trudged thousands of miles to get here and feel safe and warm.

Don't know, is supposed to be for covering extra heating costs in this country, if not here then is it necessary?
And does that start the thinking that they should also only get equivalent pension payments to their costs of living in current country of residence?
Also shouldn't their whole state pension be paid by their country of residence too like we have to pay benefits to immigrants here?

A very thought provoking thread.
We seem to split 50 50, and the ones that are not arguing against are again 50 50.
First time I have seen this.

I'm not arguing against, just saying that their new host country is responsible for their benefit payments aren't they? Like we are to arrivals here....?

I agree, but having paid in they are entitled. Caveat................if we could afford it.

Re: Should they get it?
True, but those not paid in are also entitled so regardless of that, shouldn't their country of residence now be responsible for looking after them like we are for others coming here?

Re: Should they get it?
These people chose to "give up" on Great Britain and leave, for less tax in the case of Cyprus, better weather and still be able to receive their pension!!!
They are no longer supporting the country and have moved away, should their GB passports be stopped?

You will probably find they still pay taxes to the Treasury.
