New parents becoming devout Catholics so that their kids can get into Catholic schools!
First topic message reminder :
This is happening all over the place apparently!
It was relayed to me this evening by my brother, that my other brother is having our nephew christened in a Catholic church, just so that he and his wife can get him into a decent school in the area when he gets older!
Whist we were all christened Catholic, none of them have ever set foot in a Catholic church since then. I was confirmed, more's the pity.
They are now regular church goers (even though my brother and his wife are atheist)
They have roped my other brother into attending on a regular basis, as he is going to be godfather.....They have said that he might have to go to confession
He doesn't know the Hail Mary prayer and has asked me to coach him, and he says that he would have to be in the confessional for a number of days to confess all of his sins since he was christened!
One of the god fathers needs to be a practicing Catholic, i really don't know how they will pull this one off!

What would others do, if put into this position?
If i go into that church, i'm going against all of my principles and i know that it's all a farce anyway with my brother just doing this as a reason to provide his child with the best possible education, which is again a farce as he isn't even religious!
Bottom line.....NO WAY!

Don't bite your nose of to spite your face Phil................ i hate religion and everything it stands for however i have been to religious ceremonies and have another one in April as Godfather to my neice............even though i hate religion i am doing it for my family as that is what is important...........go do what you have to do......you don't have to take part in prays and all that rubbish......but just being there is what counts for your family buddy.........being somewhere for your family isn't being a hypocrit.......
Ah.....But you were never confirmed into that religion...Went through bible studies etc..Went to church every Sunday (through choice)...Only then would you realize just how bad that business is!

Stepping into a church goes against all my values also...........however the day is not about you Phil.....its not your christening....the day is about the kids.......be there enjoy the day.. be with the family.........as that is what its about not religious mumbo jumbo........like i said nose......face.........
Basically Phil with out wanting to sound harsh.....stop being so bloody selfish in your thinking mate......its a simple thing...your being there for your family..........and that is all that counts.......regardless

There is absolutely NO WAY that i will EVER set foot into a Catholic church again. I left for a reason, and i will NEVER betray those original principles because i'm not a hypocritical person.

however scotty, being a godfather is supposed to mean that you will make sure the child follows the teachings of christ should anything happen to her parents.
Perhaps people should demand the civil equivalent for people who don't believe in Christianity. Some right must be being infringed.

I thought being the Godfather meant placing a horses head on the pillow of someone you want to scare the pants off!

Because....My mother was very rich, but she would always prefer to go to a local market to get her clothes, she would always do everything on the cheap, before she splashed any money around, and only when she had to!
That is where they are coming from! They are trying out the Catholic route of education first!...My brother is a tight wad as well!....I'll leave it at that!
so your family are agenting in an elaborate ruse in order to send their kid to a school under the umbrella of a religion they don't believe in simply because they are tighter than a snare drum
does craziness run in your family then???

I could never set foot in a Catholic church again! I've been watching the latest documentary about Catholics on BBC4...This has finally made my mind up once and for all..Even though i knew that i could never set foot into that evil church again....But was trying to convince myself that i should.
I have wished goodwill with regards to the Christening of my nephew, to my brother and his wife. But Doug and i won't be attending, but we will be there after the event outside of the Catholic church...We wish them all the best!

Not every Catholic is the same Phil!
You find evil in all religion race and creeds.
You should be there for your nephew's christining as yu are the God father too.

I can't....I would be betraying everything that was me. I can't do that. Otherwise i would be a hypocrite.

It doesn't mean that in my world............it simply means being there for them when needed........
