Frequently. It's one of the problems of living out in the country and Weil's disease caused by skin contact with rat urine was a major hazard for farmworkers before effective rodent control methods and compulsory regulations regarding protective clothing were introduced.

We used to have a major problem when this place was a livestock farm with food stores and plenty of nesting and hiding places for rats, and although the problem is now far less severe I shot three rats and got through a fair amount of rat poison last winter, and still occasionally see others particularly in the former stable block.

Haven't had any in the house, but with a BeagleXJack Russell living in it it would be a pretty foolhardy rat who tried to come in.

I have had in the past despite having dogs and cats MS.
I throw bird seed out all over the garden and apparently rats like that as well so come into your garden.

 How do they know the seeds are there though unless watching where birds gather around though which would make sense I suppose.
David Attenborough now says he knows how pigeons find their way home.
How does he know that as he's not s pigeon?

He thinks he knows but even the late, great Steve Irwin admitted after working his whole life with animals that he didn't know what makes them tick really.
He was only guessing really and he knew that.
