Dunkirk Empty Dunkirk

Post  Flap Zappa Fri Jul 28, 2017 1:50 pm

Went to see it last night and it is OK, Harry styles does not ruin it, but then he only has a couple of lines.
It does jump around a lot and the same minesweeper is sunk at least 3 times.
It deals with different time frames, a week on the beach, a day in the little ships and an hour in spitfires, so you do see the same thing form the perspective of each.

The air battles are quite good and exciting, the trip on the little ships concentrates on a single ship, the week on the beech just rushes through without you even realising its a week.
The music plays a bigger part than any dialogue. It is also rather too much up front, but that's only my view.

It's an OK film but the original dunkirk, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunkirk_(1958_film) , is a far better production and gives a far better feel to the whole affair.

after all the hype I would only give it 6/10 at best.

I went with my 15 years old step daughter and she did enjoy it and it held her attention even with subtitles to help her understand.

The best and realistic film about Dunkirk was the one with John Mills.

yes I did refer to that one as being better.
There is little dialogue in the new one, which may be a relief where harry styles is concerned.

I heard it was an historical whitewash and rewrite

In a deliberate racist attempt to promote the dominance and privilege of the white patriarch they misrepresented the ratio of white men to ethnics and gender fluid non binary lifeforms.

If one Believed  this drivel they would think it was nothing but a bunch of white men rescuing other  white men who were being killed by other white men

 Hear, hear.

A close friend of my late wife's family was an RAF pilot over the beaches and was always bitter about the way the army later condemned them for "not being there."

Apparently his Spit looked more like a Swiss cheese, there being so many holes in it, when it landed.

my mum and dad were great friends with John Mill's stuntman. Hayley Mills and a 19 year old Ian McShane came to tea with us once.

What was the dialogue like ?
Was it all - Tip Top , Tickady Boo Spiffing Old Bean etc
Or was it more realistic - lots of 'Colourful' language

Google - 'A Soldier I Would Be'
