Researchers from UCLA have been surprised to discover that since May, the black hole, called Sagittarius A*, has been consuming an unusually large amount of interstellar gas and dust

why would anyone be worried. the core is about 50000 light years away.
Now if the core had exploded then we might need to worry in 30 or 40000 years when the radiation washed across our part of the galaxy extinguishing life as it went.
