Online tax calculator falls over
A new government internet service allowing people to check how their income tax and national insurance is spent, has struggled on its first day.
From about midday the calculator was displaying an error message to some users saying it was unavailable.
A spokesman for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said 400,000 people had tried to use the site during the morning.
"Our online calculator is extremely busy at this time but a full service is being restored," he said.
"The mobile app is unaffected," he said.
'Twenty-first century system'
The new services was launched as part of the government's plan to improve the transparency of government finances.
Labour said the system did not include VAT or recent changes to tax credits and child benefits.
The service is available via apps downloaded to smartphones and, in theory, on the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) website.
Last year the Treasury announced that from 2014-15 every taxpayer would be sent a printed statement showing exactly how much tax and national insurance they had paid and how it had been spent.
The spending will be broken down by categories such as welfare, health, education, defence and the repayment of government debt.
"We think it is right that people know how much tax they pay and what the government spends it on," said David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury.
"At the moment, over half of taxpayers do not know how much income tax and national insurance they pay in a year.
"Our new tax calculator will allow them to find out, which is a big step towards a more transparent, twenty-first century system," he added.

I thought this was old news, or am I confusing it with something else I saw??

I put the app on my iPhone this morning after seeing the story on skynews.
I was horrified at how much of my money is going on welfare so immediately deleted the app disgusted

I do know of a person of dubious sexuality who never answered a question... It just asked them.
That spaz hated thatch with a vengeance... though I suspect that it was a secret tory voter!

I once saw a picture of a spaz, perhaps the same spaz, furious with rage as someone had sent him a text about Thatch
