The lead role in Doctor Who was offered to a black actor who turned it down, one of the BBC One show's writers has said.

Fantasy writer Neil Gaiman - who has scripted editions of the programme - said he still hoped a non-white star would take the role one day.

He made the revelation on his blog shortly after Peter Capaldi was announced as the next regeneration of the Time Lord, but said it felt like a "missed opportunity".

it really doesn't matter what colour or even sex the doctor is as he can be any or all.

what is required is a good actor.
in capaldi we should have that.
What you do need is someone who can play serious and comedic. Idris Elba, whilst a great actor, would not be right for the part of the doctor in my view as he projects an air of menace.

MAtt smith was virtually unknown when he got the part and he grew into it quite quickly and brought a freshness to the part, although there was a hint of troughton about him.

David Tennant was my favourite.
the best will always be tom Baker in my view, followed by John Pertwee.
Most people seem to think the doctor they grew up with was the best, however I saw doctor who from the very first episode in the 60's, incidentally it was repeated the following saturday for some reason, I think it may have had something to do with kennedy's assassination.

Although all three since the reboot have been very good.
