Bins could be collected just once a month across large parts of Britain, a senior Tory council leader warned yesterday.
Gary Porter said cuts to frontline services such as rubbish collections were inevitable after funding for local authorities was slashed again.
Council chiefs said Communities Secretary Eric Pickles’ latest cuts – part of wider plans to tackle Britain’s budget deficit – would reduce funding by around £2.6billion next year.

But Doretta Cocks, founder of the Campaign for Weekly Waste Collection, said: ‘It’s one thing talking about doing monthly collections in the winter, but in the summer there will be all sorts of problems.

bins, police, fire are real needs for communities. Cut the special projects and most especially cut the managers pay.

my friend works for a parks department and he has more managers than actual workers. Most on £50000 or more a year.

if they want to save money then require doleites to sweep the streets to free up council resources. there must be many part time jobs that could be done by those on the dole.

Why has everything suddenly well not so suddenly begun to cost so much? Our local council had at least one worker in every village and a few in each larger community, to clear snow and keep the villages clean, our cemetery had two grave diggers/caretakers, the bin men had a lorry with up and over covers on both sides, the bins would be manually lifted and emptied into the lorry (Mostly ashes - heavy) the lorry doubled as a griting lorry in winter with the bin me riding in the back with the covers off of course shovelling grit onto the road, there were about four men, one driving and three collecting and emptying bins they were all paid a wage and all had a pension at the end of it and it was paid for by rates in the area - labour intensive and we could apparently afford it, bring in lorries to automatically empty the bins, cut the number of workers and now we can't afford it - what's happened?

I think its the same in most Med countries, in Spain they came every night at midnight and woke up all and sundry, clattering them big communal bins about. But yeah, much preferred it. And during the night they would also spray wash all the roads and pavements.

well 'elf and safety have no doubt added severe costs to bin collections where now it is against the rules for the bin men to actually lift the bins.
I was in america some years ago and where I was staying the bins were emptied by one man who drove the truck and the truck tipped the wheely bin into the container. He did not even get out the cab. Of course it was the suburbs and you had to put the trash on the sidewalk yourself on the right day, but he cleared the street pretty damn quickly. you also could not park on the street on bin day. Of course it wouldnt work for many citys but it should work in the 'burbs

I worked as a bin-man for a while before I joined  the Corps and you are absolutely right Flix.

The curse of too many unnecessary  highly  paid "managers" plus  stupid Elf n Safety rules are to blame.

We now have incredible technology which has made life easier in some ways but when it isn't used properly or doesn't work right you end up in an incredible mess. Not to mention lots of people with no work. I'm not sure what the majority of the human race will be doing when robotic machines take over just about everything, probably fighting for space, food and water. The social aspect of taking people off the front line of services is another problem some people don't see a living soul to talk to for days on end, then you see people out and about head down and texting I've no idea how they have so much to say texting and so little to say verbally to the person next to them, unless they are texting each other of course. I used to like going to our local and having a good old chin wag with the locals, now we have no pub and the others that have survived are basically food outlets or your chest vibrates from the loud music and you have to communicate with hand signals. Not all advances are good ones.

A massive Solar Flare that wipes out technology will resolve the overcrowding problem quite effectively.
