The Royal Navy is in a ‘perilous situation’ and needs 4,000 extra sailors to man its new aircraft carriers and nuclear submarine fleet, it was revealed yesterday.
Former military top brass warned how the Navy, Army and RAF had been hit with massive manpower shortages after devastating cuts to Britain’s Armed Forces.
Defence chiefs are now asking countries across the world to loan Britain troops in a desperate bid to make up the numbers, it was said.
The embarrassing scramble to re-recruit servicemen to man the UK’s warplanes and new aircraft carriers comes after the Government heavily slashed the forces during its last defence review in 2010.
A shortage in personnel has resulted in both the RAF and Royal Navy looking to recruit foreign fighters in order to fill a gap in manpower.
Retired Vice Admiral Sir Jeremy Blackham warned: ‘From a naval point of view, there is a serious problem. It’s said to be when I last spoke to the Fleet Commander, of the order of 3,500 to 4,000 people.’
He said without achieving those numbers ‘it would be impossible to send ships to sea fully manned’.
He added: ‘There is a serious manpower problem which will negate some of the investment we are making in equipment unless it is addressed. There is a deal on the table but it falls very, very far short.

Why don't we just rent Britain out, fully furnished except for any kind of defence force.

Fully furnished, Flix? Bloody hell...our two new much vaunted aircraft carriers already have the serious problem of, er, not having any aeroplanes to carry.

This country is becoming an absolute laughing stock; we can apparently accommodate limitless numbers of immigrants who have only to smuggle themselves into the country on the back of a lorry and utter the word "asylum", but we can't afford to look after our old folk properly, provide adequate treatment for cancer patients or educate our kids to a level beyond Janet and John Book Three.

And as for defending our nation and its interests in any future crisis, we may as well send a dozen Boy Scouts armed with balloons on sticks.

Doesn't it make you feel pro ------, er embarrassed, we are trying to play with the big boys with nothing to offer. If we insist on trying to be important in the world we need the tools, otherwise we'd better just fade away quietly from centre stage.  Mind you it was the ladies of West Wales that put the French invasion force to flight, they did a pretty good job of stopping those French troops who weren't too drunk to stand, I wonder if the current WI's could join with the Scouts and their balloons to repel boarders.
Wasn't it all a bit of a shambles before the second world war? Is it possible we are heading down the same path.

With the possible exception of the Hungarians, are all our European leaders and politicians hooked on mind altering drugs, the mess they are making is unbelievable. If this is what they do when supposedly sober and clean maybe they should be given some medication because there must be some very serious mental problems in their ranks.
