Could Britain face a second EU referendum already? MPs could be forced to debate staging another vote after petition tops 100,000 target within hours of Brexit result
The prospect of holding a second EU referendum could be debated in Parliament in coming weeks after a petition topped the 100,000 target within hours of the result being declared.
It was so popular that the Government petition website hosting the motion crashed this morning.
The petition demands the Government re-stage the referendum because the winning vote for Leave was less than 60 per cent and was based on a turnout of less than 75 per cent.
Vote Leave won the historic vote by 51.9 per cent of the vote to 48.1 per cent - a margin of 1,269,501 votes.
Although the decision is not legally binding on MPs, it would be an act of political suicide for any group to attempt to override it and order a second referendum after months of hard-fought campaigning.
Any petition that receives more than 100,000 signatures within six months must be considered for debate by MPs in Parliament.
Any petition that attracts more than 10,000 in the time period requires a response from the Government.
By lunch time today the petition had already attracted more than 120,000 signatures.
The petition - started by William Oliver Healey this morning - states: ‘We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based on a turnout less than 75% there should be another referendum.’

and if we stay then the leavers will make another petition and have a third referendum, and if we leave then the remainders will make another petition and we will have a fourth referendum and so on and so on

not often it happens but I totally agree with you.scrat wrote:Ain't gonna happen the British people have voted to leave the EU and with a turnout @ 72.2% far too high to be contested.
Any politician who tried to vote the result down would be committing political suicide.
On that note did anyone see Tim Farron (who I hear you ask, you know leader of the liberal democrats (who I hear you ask)) this morning? he really is pissed his chance at the gravy train has gone out the window

I once wrote to Tim Fallon and asked him what the hell he thought he was doing (not in those words of course) wanting more people to come to this already overcrowded island. I asked if it wouldn't be more reasonable to take care of those already here and work on giving everyone a job and a basic decent living not a living where they need to decide on eating or heating. I was thanked very politey for my observations but it was obvious even in political speak that what I had said fell on deaf (and brainwashed) ears.
There is some talk of us being offered a deal to stay, (like Iceland in 1982 or whatever), can't see it myself, I think the powers that be in the EU will try to punish us for having the audacity to leave and give other countries ideas, I don't think they'll succeed though, they will make threats. If they do offer a deal and it would have to be a very good one maybe there should be another referendum.
These pesky voters are getting in the way of the EU dicatorship again, if only they could be dispensed with.

more than 2/3's of the signatures on that petition are from outside the UK.

update on this , DAvid Lammy is now calling for parliament to vote against the result.Flap Zappa wrote:not often it happens but I totally agree with you.scrat wrote:Ain't gonna happen the British people have voted to leave the EU and with a turnout @ 72.2% far too high to be contested.

this petition does not do any such thing. It was started last month and obviously did not reach the required numbers before the referendum
it calls for a 75% vote turnout or vote is rerun.
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/131215
We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based a turnout less than 75% there should be another referendum.
Created by William Oliver Healey
Deadline 25 November 2016
petitions run for 6 months so this was created april 25th.
it stands no chance of affecting the result of the EU referendum, but may well make it impossible for scotland and NI to ever leave if implemented.
thanks to didge for pointing this out elsewhere.
