I would never shoot dead any intruders

I would want to keep them alive for as long as possible in my cellar

Not only do I remember Tony Martin...I knew the bloke. He had previous experience of thieving Pikeys so he had been provoked and threatened before, but on that occasion he apparently planned the whole thing, waiting for them (I reckon he had been tipped off) and then opening up with an illegally held pump action shotgun when they were running away.

I have a fairly isolated house out in the sticks and I own a licensed shotgun, and I was once warned by a cop - unofficially and off the record, of course - that if I felt my life to be threatened by an intruder I would be justified in using my gun in self defence, but on no account should I shoot anyone in the back if they were legging it. I was also given the nod that it would help with any defence if they happened to have something like a screwdriver or a knife in their hand at the time.

I don't know the background for him being stopped by six policemen on suspicion of drink driving, but I suppose if they had reason to know in advance that it was him and that he had a previous firearm conviction, they could easily justify their action.
