I read that sometime but i can't remember the story,  I'll have to hunt out the book again.

The 'mother of all bombs'  destroyed over 30 of the garbage and destroyed their rat-holes. 

ps: Russia claims to have the 'Father of all bombs',  will the bombs be getting married I wonder??

I wonder if Afghanistan will ever be a functioning country or will it always be a 'Special Needs' case

It was becoming a functioning, modern country in the sixties, then things began to go wrong and Russia got involved the the USA through the CIA, then it was all down hill from there.

it rarely has been a functioning country in its entire history.

I once saw a programme about an area of afghanistan, in the hills, where a tribe lived who were apparently descended from members of Alexander the Great's army. They were very happy free people, almost hippy, nominally Muslim but dressed in colourful clothes the women wore a nominal gauzy veil with a sort of pill box hat. No one was forced to hide their face or marry unless they wanted to, women moved around as they wished, molestation was unknown or as we found out later a very serious matter. The anthropologist - a woman - studying the customs and culture stayed in a tent on the edge of the village, one night a man who was fairly impressed with her, got into her tent to express his undying love and propose, she screamed at his appearance, the whole village came running, the man was taken away and the next day the village declared he would die for what he had so rashly done, it was just not the way these people did things, he was only saved after the anthropologist begged for his life and forgave him.
except for the death sentence they seem like reasonable people, I wonder what happened to them under the Taliban.
