Re: LIVE FROM COURT : The full horror of the 13 siblings in California
Just some of the allegations ...
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The parents would buy food for themselves and not allow the children to eat it. They would buy food including pies, apple pies, pumpkin pies and leave it on the counter, let the children look at it, but not eat the food.
20:02
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The only thing the children were allowed to do was write in their journals - we have recovered those journals, hundreds of them, and are combing through them for evidence.
20:00
District attorney Mike Hestrin: When the 17-year-old was asked if there was medication or pills in the home, she didn't know what medication or pills were.
20:00
District attorney Mike Hestrin: They lack a basic knowledge of life - many of the children didn't know what a police officer was.
19:59
District attorney Mike Hestrin: They were not allowed to have toys, but there were many toys that were found in the house that were in their original packaging and had never been opened.
19:58
District attorney Mike Hestrin: When they were not chained up, the children were locked in different rooms and fed very little and on a schedule.
19:57
District attorney Mike Hestrin: None of the victims have seen a doctor in more than four years, and none of them have ever seen a dentist.
19:57
District attorney Mike Hestrin says punishments would include frequent beatings and strangulation.
District attorney Mike Hestrin: None of the victims were allowed to shower more than once a year.
19:53
District attorney Mike Hestrin: Several of the victims have cognitive impairment and nerve damage as a result of this extreme and prolonged physical abuse.
19:52
District attorney Mike Hestrin: One of the children aged 12 is the weight of an average seven-year-old.
19:51
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The victims are suffering from severe caloric malnutrition associated with muscle wasting
19:46
District attorney Mike Hestrin: All the victims were and are severely malnourished.
19:45
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The abuse and severe neglect intensified over time.
19:43
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The family lived in Texas for 17 years and moved to California in 2010, and then to their current residence in 2014
19:41
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The neglect and abuse started when the family lived in Texas with the parents at one point living separately from the children and occasionally dropping off food.
19:39
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The 17-year-old who escaped had escaped with a sibling who became afraid and turned back.
19:38
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The 17-year-old who escaped had been working on an escape plan with her siblings for two years.
19:38
District attorney Mike Hestrin: Evidence in the house suggests the victims were not unchained to go to the bathroom.
19:37
District attorney Mike Hestrin: Three victims were chained up when the police arrived at the home - aged 11, 14 and 22.
19:35
District attorney Mike Hestrin: These punishments would last for weeks or even months at a time.
19:34
Chains and padlocks
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The victims said as a punishment they would be tied up with ropes but when they were able to escape their parents began using chains and padlocks.
19:32
District attorney Mike Hestrin: These individuals sleep all day and are up all night. All 13 victims and the defendants would go to sleep around four or five in the morning and sleep all day.
District attorney Mike Hestrin: The parents would buy food for themselves and not allow the children to eat it. They would buy food including pies, apple pies, pumpkin pies and leave it on the counter, let the children look at it, but not eat the food.

Re: LIVE FROM COURT : The full horror of the 13 siblings in California
Its just beyond belief that this could go on, when they have families, neighbours, they were home schooling the children. Did no one ever check???
You get the horrible feeling that this is just the tip of the iceberg, god alone knows what the full story is here.

I reckon quite a few people closed their eyes around this heinous crime.
There are none so blind as those who WILL NOT SEE.

Re: LIVE FROM COURT : The full horror of the 13 siblings in California
I can't get this case out my mind.
Harves, you're right. What has been revealed so far, is just the tip of the iceberg. The DA said yesterday that this is just the very beginning of the investigation and very possible more charges will be brought as they unravel this case and learn more.
It's also came to light that police found 2 Maltese dogs in their home, that were well looked after and fed. Unbelievable!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
You know how brainwashed and bad it must have been for them kids, when two escaped, but one turned back cos she was scared and went back into that hellhole. It took them 2 years to plan their escape. I feel something was imminent, that triggered the girl to think, its now or never to escape or else we will die here.
The oldest chlld/adult was a 29 year old woman and weighed just 5 and half stone.
It has been reported that when this case comes to trial, it will last over a year in court. I hope it is televised, not so I can ghoul watch, but to witness this pair of monsters explain how they are not guilty.
it will be a long road of recovery for these kids, but I wish them peace, love and kindness in their world from this moment on.

Re: LIVE FROM COURT : The full horror of the 13 siblings in California
You just never know what goes on behind closed doors.
We have a local case here, which shocked my small town and is due for trial this March.
A disabled woman of 42 was being cared for in her home by her daughter 19 and the disabled woman's sister in her thirties.
Turned out the disabled woman hadn't been seen for months and the neighbours next door started complaining about a smell coming through their walls. Police knocked on the door a couple of times, but were always fobbed off and told the woman was sleeping, unwell in bed resting etc. Anyway, the man next door went back once again to the police and insisted they do a search of the house, that something was not quite right in there.
The police found the disabled woman, or what was left of her, inbedded into her mattress. The evil pair of swines had beat her up and left her to rot and die in her bed, lying there for 3 months. And all the time pretending to the outside world that all was fine, carrying on their life as normal. The two of them have been charged with murder and numerous other offences.

Re: LIVE FROM COURT : The full horror of the 13 siblings in California
What is also a bit strange about this case in America, is that the kids were allowed to keep journals for years that apparently amounted to hundreds of them been found by police.
Question is, why would the parents allow the kids to write their thoughts in these journals, which they must have known would be used in evidence against them?
I guess there's a lot more to this case. I don't believe the parents were mentally ill, but just pure evil and sadistic and took some sort of pleasure out of treating their kids with such depravity. They got a kick out of it, I think.

Re: LIVE FROM COURT : The full horror of the 13 siblings in California
In answer to my question - no
(CNN)David Turpin, administrator and principal of a Southern California private school operated out of his home, gave it an inviting name: Sandcastle Day School.
The engineer started the school by simply filling out a Department of Education affidavit stating that his children were attending full-time. No more was required in California, and the state has no authority to monitor or inspect the school.........
