what a sanctimonious load of old twaddle.
I have just watched the first episode and found it quietly charming and not played in a spiteful way at all.
Derek is not the butt of jokes but a child like character who see life through different eyes. He sees the good in everyone.
there are not the belly laughs that might have occurred in the office, but there is humour there and it is not spiteful humour. There is a real tenderness and vulnerability in Derek. the funniest bit was when he fell in the garden pond.
Carl Pilkington is also surprisingly good as his best mate and handyman. Although the part was written for him so there is a lot of carl in it.
IT seems that some people see ism's and phobes every where they look and that I suspect says far more about their view of the world than the reality of what actually is.

I thought his acting was very good in this. He certainly makes the character sympathetic and not a parody.

Ricky Gervais was brilliant in this - Pilkington played the same part he always has.
As for the story - wonderful and touching just like the end of the office - he made Derek appear like a very nice character.

Gervais is an absolute legend imo. I love everything he does but must admit to having not seen Derek yet. I am sure it will be more brilliance from Gervais. He seems to attract this arsey opinions though for everything he does. In my eyes his work actually tend to mock the idiots who ARE uncomfortable about 'differences' in people; this seems lost on certain people and self important journalists who want to tear him down at any opportunity.

Have to agree I watched it and Derek was portrayed as a very likeable person imo. I didn't see any mockery in the whole programme and thought it was good and will get better as the series progresses.

I liked the bit where his female mate nutted the woman who was taking the piss in the pub.

That was brilliant, just watched on 4od flap thanks for the pointer
It was very emotional, I was filling up when he went into the old womans room at the end. I suppose it is easy to forget how Ricky actually CAN act amid all the controversy. It wasn''t pure comedy, it was to me a good representation of life. At times funny at times sad. Great show, I'm guessing it is the start of a series?

it seems from the comments on the article that those who did not watch it were disgusted and those that did enjoyed it or were surprised at how good it was. Gentle and poignant comedy seems the best description although even that does not do it justice.
the bit where joan died was indeed very touching and very well acted by Ricky, who lets face it is not known for being that good.
I also like carl as douggie, although the part was written especially for him and is more or less him. A good first time as an actor for him.
a better review seems to be in the telegraph

Wow very fair assesment there by the TG. As you can imagine the Guardian was all frowns and tutting
I have actually thought Ricky always a fairly decent although VERY limited actor, at least where comedy acting is concerned. Look forward to the rest of the series

Yep...
I would imagine that the parent was ashamed for the actions taken which has meant that the offspring is very special.
Perhaps time would be better spent caring for the child and not whining to all and sundry?

ricky gervais received thousands of tweets over this apparantly. Mostly very positive with people saying that watching it made them want to be a better person and more tolerant etc. I think it's had a very positive impact on the whole. The whinging twat who was so convinced that gervais is just a nasty piece of work who is taking the piss quite obviously has his own unfortunate issues to deal with
