I cannot understand the mentality of the residents who are complaining at having surface to air missile systems located on or near their homes.

How would they feel if a hijacked airliner flew into the main stadium?

I think it's great that the military are placing surface-to-air missiles in South East London for the Olympics.

It's going to give most of the residents wonderful memories of their homelands.

while the AA missiles can shoot down an aircraft, it will still land on the most populated city in the country.
any plane that is brought down will still kill hundreds if not thousands. It may even be better propaganda wise for the terrorists if the government were forced to shoot it down rather than just having the terrorists crash it.

We are a few mins from the Stadium but live in acres and acres of forest and green fields. So a plane being shot down is no problem.
