The masked thugs – led by crack dealer Jake Prempeh – struck terror into victims by pointing a pump-action sawn-off shotgun in their faces and threatening to shoot.
By the time police caught up with them, they had been active for a month, raiding eight premises at gunpoint including betting shops and small business in Manchester and Salford as well as a busy city centre branch of McDonald’s.
They had also struck in Derby and Northampton, stealing cash and goods worth over £10k in the raids, some of which happened hours apart.
The mob were on their way back from robbing a couple who they had followed from a casino in Northampton and terrorised in their own home when the law finally caught up with them.
After a 95mph car chase, Prempeh and partner-in-crime Kayode Freeman were captured.
But getaway driver Romahn Richards escaped, ran to the top of a multi-storey car park and had to be talked out of jumping by police negotiators in a siege lasting several hours.
Sending them down after they admitted charges including robbery, possessing a firearm, possessing class A drugs and dangerous driving, Judge David Stockdale QC described their crimes as ‘serious in the extreme’, adding: “The ordeal for the victims in each case must have been terrifying.”
The gang struck first at Coral bookmakers in Chorlton on the night of May 22.
One of the two workers was hit on the head with the shotgun before the robbers escaped with an iPhone and a wallet and £800 from the till in a raid involving Prempeh and Omar Berryman.
Five days after that Prempeh, Richards and getaway driver Berryman held up a Ladbrokes in Derby, escaping with £3,000.

An unemployed man who repeatedly stabbed a sex worker and set her hair on fire has been founded guilty of attempted murder.
Kirk Patrick Wynter, of no fixed abode, accused the 37-year-old victim of stealing his money but despite finding it had not been stolen, demanded all of the her earnings for the night on June 21 last year.
He searched the woman’s handbag while he brutally attacked her by setting her hair on fire, beating her with an umbrella and stabbing her with a pair of scissors found in the bag.
The woman managed to call for an ambulance after 32-year-old Wynter fled. The alarm was also raised by a member of the public who heard her cries for help in Bramfield Court in Queen’s Road, Finsbury Park.
She was found on the floor of a storage room covered in blood with multiple stab wounds to her back, leg and torso and was taken by London’s Air Ambulance to a hospital in east London, where she was found to have two collapsed lungs.
Wynter was arrested in Stoke Newington almost a week after the attack after his DNA was found in vomit at the crime scene.
He was found guilty of attempted murder on Monday, July 20, after a trial at the Old Bailey.
Detective Constable Sophie Hayes, from the Violent Crime Unit at Hackney, said: “The victim has shown great courage in reporting this matter to the police and attending court to give evidence.
“She was terrified when Wynter repeatedly stabbed her, telling her he would leave her to die. She suffered serious injuries and she is lucky to be alive.”
Wynter will be sentenced at the same court on September 1.

'Sir King Cash': Sean Benson was jailed for seven years over his £1.3million fraud (Picture: Metropolitan Police)

A south London fraudster called himself “Sir King Cash” as he plundered more than £1.3million using a scam website claiming to sell DJ equipment.
Sean Benson bought stolen bank details from a Russian cyber criminal network and used his fake music website to raid the accounts.
The 26-year-old, from Canterbury Road, Croydon, lavished £40,000 of his vast criminal profits on an extravagant wedding and honeymoon in Hawaii.
He was yesterday jailed for seven years at Southwark Crown Court for two counts of fraud and three of money laundering.
His wife, Jennifer Hallam, 25, was also mixed up in the plot and received a suspended 18-month sentence for money laundering.
Suspended sentence: Jennifer Hallam was spared jail after being convicted of money laundering (Picture: Metropolitan Police) Benson created an online identity with a cartoon logo and the name Sir King Cash, or SKC, as he traded in stolen bank information using an online forum.
He set up a company called Identity Music which claimed to specialise in audio equipment for DJs and musicians.
He then made phoney purchases through the fake firm's website using the stolen credit and debit card details.

The Old Bailey heard the abuse in Aylesbury went on for years and involved rape and child prostitution.
Eleven defendants faced trial, accused of 47 sexual offences between 2006 and 2012.
Four were cleared of any wrongdoing, while the jury could not reach a verdict on one of the men.
The six who have been convicted will be sentenced in September.

A rapist has been jailed for eight and a half years after he attacked a woman in the street as she travelled home from a night out with friends.
Olaoluwa Ibrahim, 38, approached his victim, who he did not know, as she got off a night bus in Maida Vale after spending the evening in central London.
He tried to start a conversation with her but she ignored him and carried on walking home, the Old Bailey heard.
But Ibrahim grabbed her and pushed her into a driveway where he raped her before stealing her phone and running away in the early hours of June 24 last year.
Ibrahim, of Relf Road, Peckham, admitted rape and theft at the Old Bailey today.
He initially denied the attack until detectives uncovered DNA evidence. He then claimed he had had consensual sex with the victim, before changing his story again and admitting rape.
His victim gave evidence in the case via video link from Australia, where she is now living, police said.

The judge ruled today that Ibrahim will be deported back to Nigeria after serving his sentence.
Detective Constable Adam Knott, of the Met's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said he had shown "no remorse or honesty" since he was arrested.
He said: "I would like to reassure the public that attacks of this nature are extremely rare. When they do occur, we do everything we can to bring the offenders to justice.
"Ibrahim has shown no remorse or honesty from the point of arrest and his deception continued throughout the trial, putting the victim through the trauma of having to recount her ordeal in court. I hope it is of some comfort to her to know he will now spend a considerable amount of time in prison before being deported.
"He is a genuinely dangerous offender and I am pleased he has been removed from public life."
He added: "I would urge anyone who has been the victim of sexual violence to come forward safe in the knowledge that they will be listened to, the case will be thoroughly investigated and we can provide bespoke victim care depending on individual needs.”

Criminal empire of drug dealing Khan brothers crumbles under 25-year jail term
Asif and Zia Khan employed others to their dirty work, mixing and delivering drugs, but their criminal network which spanned all of Greater Manchester has been shut down at Bolton Crown Court

The Khan brothers, jailed on Friday after a trial at Bolton Crown Court
Drug dealing brothers who ran a criminal network spanning Greater Manchester have been jailed for more than a quarter of a century.
Bolton siblings Asif and Zia Khan employed couriers and “store men” to mix and distribute drugs on their behalf.
But the Khan brothers’ empire crumbled when police stopped three cars stashed with drugs in Ardwick on July 16 last year.
More than £42,000 worth of cannabis was discovered in the boot of a black Toyota Corolla.
The three ‘couriers’ working on behalf of Asif Khan, who was controlling the deal, were arrested.
Later that summer, a man was seen leaving a house in the Halliwell area of Bolton with an envelope containing wrappings used to package Class A drugs.
Asif Khan was jailed for 16 years
When the house was searched, officers discovered a shoebox containing a kilo of cocaine worth more than £140,000.
The man with the envelope, Adil Khan, was working for the Khan brothers cutting and weighing the cocaine.
He was jailed for eight years in February.
Two other men were jailed for two-and-a-half years and 10 months each earlier this year for their roles in the conspiracy.
On Friday, the brothers behind the entire operation were served justice following a trial at Bolton Crown Court.
Asif Khan, 24, of Rosamond Street in Bolton, was convicted of conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs and jailed for 16 years.
His brother Zia, 41, of Westbourne Avenue in Bolton, was convicted of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and caged for 10 years.
Jailed: Zia Khan
Detective Constable Ian Graham from GMP’s Serious Organised Crime Group said: “They had no wish to get their hands dirty but their control over this drug-dealing network was undeniable.
“They used Eastbank Street as safe haven for drugs under their control and following Adil Khan’s arrest, they arranged for a locksmith to gain entry to the property so they could check the whereabouts of their drugs.
“To have convicted these brothers means we have dismantled the day-to-day operations of this organised criminal network and in doing so, disrupted the supply of drugs onto the streets of our communities.
“I would like to commend all the officers who have worked tirelessly on this investigation which began back in November 2012.”

Kamran Yasin, left, will be sentenced next month for conspiracy to commit fraud while Alina Khan received a suspended jail sentence over the scam crash, pictured above
Fraudsters behind a ‘crash for cash’ plot to net £30,000 in insurance payouts were brought to justice after a staged collision was captured by a driver’s dashboard camera.
The motorist installed the onboard ‘dash-cam’ to protect himself after being warned by a friend about faked, non-accidental collisions.
And the footage recorded on his camera has now led to the convictions of two men and a woman behind a scam following a crash two of them orchestrated on Chester Road in Hulme in 2011.
The footage from the man’s Vauxhall Corsa captured the moment a silver Audi in front, driven by Alina Khan, braked suddenly leaving him no chance to avoid hitting the rear of the car, a court heard.

The 30-year-old mother-of-three from Eric Street in Oldham, ‘slammed on the brakes in what appeared to be an emergency stop’ with ‘no reason or jutification’ for her action, Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court was told.
Kamran Yasin, 32, from Brook Lane in Oldham, was driving beside the victim on the inside lane, leaving him no chance to manoeuvre.
Details were exchanged and Yasin contacted his friend Sarfaraz Ahmed, 31, of Cambridge Road in Oldham, the owner of accident management company AMC Claims.

Mourner caught at Manchester Airport with £2m consignment of heroin

Smuggler Hafiz Ali brought the drugs back from Pakistan after travelling there to repatriate the body of a worshipper from his mosque

Jailed: Hafaz Ali (right) and brother-in-law Rafaqat Hussain
A £2m consignment of heroin was recovered from a suitcase at Manchester Airport belonging to a mourner returning from Pakistan.
The drugs were intercepted after a baggage handling error meant the case, which had been loaded at Lahore, missed its connecting flight from Abu Dhabi and arrived two days late.
Smuggler Hafiz Ali, 48, had travelled out to Pakistan to repatriate the body of a worshipper from his mosque who had died suddenly, Manchester Crown Court heard.
But during the month he was out there he was recruited into a plot to supply heroin to dealers in the UK.
After landing in Manchester and realising his baggage wasn’t on the carousel, frantic Ali made a series of trips from his home in West Yorkshire to Manchester in the desperate hope of recovering the drugs in the days afterwards.
Staff noted that he was sweating nervously, and he was eventually arrested minutes after the bag arrived, three days after he had arrived back in the UK.
The heroin consignment in Ali's case
Ali, of Cardigan Close, Batley, has now been jailed for seven-and-a-half years for conspiracy to import heroin, alongside his 29-year-old brother-in-law, Rafaqat Hussain, of Wakefield, who drove him to the airport in his attempts to get the drugs back.
Hussain, who has previous drug-dealing convictions, has been jailed for seven years.
Both men pleaded guilty to the offences, which dated back to April 2014, following a National Crime Agency investigation.
The bag contained 15kg of heroin, split into packages weighing roughly 2kg, with a 58 per cent purity.
Prosecutor Michael Maher said: “Heroin can be purchased in Pakistan for as little as £3,000 a kilo, but in the UK sold for between £25,000 and £35,000 a kilo. The wholesale value (of the consignment) was £420,000, with a street value of over £2m.”
Richard Vardon, defending Hafiz, claimed he was the ‘classic courier’, employed to take a risk for more sophisticated criminals for modest reward.
“He is a family man with four children - nothing in his background suggested he would get involved in any offence as serious as this. There’s no evidence he went out to Pakistan with the view he would import drugs on his return - he was recruited having gone there for genuine reasons.”
Mohammed Nawaz, defending Hussain, said of him: “He was ‘not involved in the wider conspiracy to profit from the sale of that heroin, and was not aware of the quantity being imported into this country.”
Rob Miles, head of the National Crime Agency’s Manchester border investigation team, said: “These men used a tragic event and the generosity of their community to fund their drug running.
“The heroin seized would have had a potential street value of over £2 million – no doubt Ali and Hussain knew there was a huge profit to be made.
“Working with our colleagues at Border Force we are determined to do all we can to disrupt international organised crime networks and prevent them using Manchester Airport to bring illegal drugs into the UK.”

Ronald Motlhokodise has been jailed for 12 years after assaulting a teenage girl while he was on bail for rape
A sex attacker has been jailed for 12 years after assaulting a teenage girl while he was on bail for raping a 16-year-old.
Ronald Motlhokodise, from Broadfield, Crawley, raped the teenage girl after luring her to his home, just days after the pair had met in August 2013. The 22-year-old was arrested, charged and bailed over the offence.
But seven months later, while he was waiting to stand trial, Motlhokodise followed a 17-year-old into the hotel on Crawley High Street and carried out a serious sexual assault.
The pair had only met minutes earlier when they started talking outside the hotel, where they were both staying as guests.
Motlhokodise has now been jailed after being convicted of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault.
He was also issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) which restricts his contact with women until further notice. He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for life.
Following the six-day trial at Lewes Crown Court, Detective Constable Natalie Freeman praised the two young women for their courage in giving evidence against their attacker.
She said: 'Motlhokodise is clearly a danger to young women he encounters. These were both casual acquaintances, in the second case he met the victim just minutes before he attacked her.
'Both had to give evidence at the trial from behind screens so that they did not have to see the defendant.

Two “cruel and cunning” fraudsters have been jailed for tricking elderly people out of £265,000 – including one who was scammed while at a funeral.
Greedy conmen Abdul Mohib, 23, and 19-year-old Mominur Rahman – who celebrated his crimes by taking a selfie with a wad of cash against his face – persuaded one 68-year-old victim to hand over £8,500 while they were at a friend’s funeral, according to police.
The devious fraudsters preyed on vulnerable and elderly people across London over a 10-week period from August to October last year, taking large sums and leaving them feeling “humiliated”, officers said.
They fooled one 85-year-old into giving them £28,250 over a three-day period, and stole a gold Rolex watch worth £20,850 from another victim aged 80.
The duo cheated their targets using a "particularly unpleasant" version of the notorious ‘courier fraud’ tactic.
Fraudster: Abdul Mohib
They would phone victims on landlines while posing as a police officer, warn them their bank accounts had been defrauded and urge them to ring the bank straight away.
However, the con artists kept the line open so it was they that answered when victims tried to make the call.
The fraudsters bamboozled their victims with police jargon and even invited them to bogus court hearings as well as providing fake crime reference numbers.
But they were captured after an investigation by Westminster’s serious acquisitive crime unit dubbed Operation Juventus.
The men pleaded guilty to a total of 27 offences committed over the 10-week stretch and were jailed at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday.
Mohib, of Frederick Street, King’s Cross, was locked up for three years and eight months and teenager Rahman received 12 months.
Jailed: Mominur Rahman was handed a one-year sentence
Detective Constable Will Richards said: "This is a particularly unpleasant version of the courier fraud scam that exploits its victims' sense of public duty and preparedness to go to extraordinary lengths to help the police.
“Beyond their significant financial losses, these offences undermine victims' self-confidence and trust in others.
“Many were left feeling vulnerable and humiliated. This was a cruel and cunning scam, and the only people who should feel humiliated by it are those responsible.
"These crimes were clearly well-planned and practiced. Abdul Mohib kept victims on the phone for several hours and did his best to prevent them from discussing what was happening with their families.
"I hope that today's result will increase public awareness of this type of crime."

Three men have been jailed after investigations into child sex grooming in Rochdale and Oldham.
Bilal Ahmed, 27, of Tentercroft, Oldham, Dilon Rasul, 24, of Worsley Street, Oldham, and Hassan Ali, 21, of no fixed abode, have all been found guilty at Minshull Street Crown Court.
The offences involved two teenage girls and a teenage boy who were all living in independent care homes in Rochdale.
Ahmed was handed seven years in prison and made subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order after being found guilty of two counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of child abduction.
Rasul, who came to the UK after fleeing Iran in 2009, was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of facilitating a child sex offence.
Both were made to sign the sex offenders’ register.
The convictions came after the Sunrise team, a joint operation between Greater Manchester Police and Rochdale council, launched investigations into why the three children were repeatedly going missing from care.
It was suggested they were being groomed between September 16 and October 17 last year.
It was discovered Ali had started to speak to the boy in Rochdale town centre and was introduced to the girls who were then given alcohol and drugs over a period of nearly a month.
They were sexually exploited by Ahmed at addresses arranged by Rasul in neighbouring Oldham.
Defending Ahmed, Brandon O’Leary, told the court: “He is an educated young man who has completed his university degree and was planning for his future. This was an offence that was wholly out of character for him.”
Detective Constable Ben Harris said: “All four men befriended the children, who were extremely vulnerable, and were given drink and drugs. The offenders gained their trust before taking advantage of them to satisfy their own needs. Thanks to multi-agency work, the children were safeguarded and those responsible for causing this misery were caught and today brought to justice.”

The members of the public raised the alarm and unarmed officers tackled Michael Lindo, 34, and Aaron Dumetz, 24, as they fled the scene in Brixton.
The pair grabbed cash and jewellery worth more than £64,000 after holding two terrified women at gunpoint at the Harvey and Thompson pawnbrokers in Atlantic Road in May this year.
The two men - dressed in full length black burkas - marched into the store as the two staff members were opening up, one was vaccuuming the floor and the other placing jewellery in the window.
Lindo produced a handgun and ordered one of the women into a security room, forcing her at gunpoint to open a safe containing jewellery and cash in various currencies.
However, members of the public had noticed the men and became suspicious because “they did not walk like women,” Inner London Crown Court heard.
They raised the alarm and unarmed officers were on the scene within moments, giving chase as the two men fled.
The robbers were caught after a short pursuit and the officers were praised today for “remarkable bravery” in confronting the pair without knowing the gun was fake. Lindo and Dumetz were jailed yesterday for more than 20 years after a judge described the robbery as “professional” and “carefully planned.”
The court heard Lindo had 19 previous convictions for robbery or attempted robbery, two of them with firearms.
Judge Nic Madge described Lindo as having an “appalling previous record” and said it would have been difficult to identity the pair because of their disguise if members of the public had not intervened.
Jailing Lindo for 11 years and Dumetz for nine years he said there was no doubt that the raid was a “professionally planned commercial robbery” which would have involved some reconnaissance and planning in acquiring the burkas and the imitation firearm.
Jailed: Aaron Anthony Duymetz, left, and Michael Lindo.

The 29-year-old victim woke up on April 5, her boyfriend having gone to work at 5.30am, to find Roman Torac in bed with her.
In the hours that followed she was raped six times, repeatedly sexually assaulted, badly beaten and psychologically tortured by frenzied Torac, Manchester Crown Court heard.
The sex beast then fled from Manchester to London, turning up at Belgravia police station, where he told an officer: “I have big problem.”
Torac, 36, of Claremont Road, Moss Side, then typed out some words in his native Slovakian on a police computer.
Officers used the online Google Translate programme to reveal that he had written ‘this morning I raped girl.”
The victim has described herself as feeling ‘destroyed and humiliated’ by her terrifying ordeal, Torac’s sentencing hearing was told, after he pleaded guilty to six charges of rape, two sex assaults, false imprisonment and threats to kill.
She managed to escape the room after she was first attacked by Torac, who had threatened to kill her if she didn’t submit. He then dragged her back by her hair.
She was raped again and then tied up and gagged. At one stage Torac held a carving knife to her and told her: “You’re already dead.”
When he dressed her in her own clothes, she thought her ordeal was over.
Torac then used a knife to slit her clothing open, and attacked her yet again.
Torac even told her it was her fault and that he would get her pregnant. He fled after choking her until she passed out.
She came to and had to crawl downstairs to seek help.
Defending Torac, who has a previous conviction for fraud in his native Slovakia, Michael Goldwater said the attack was not premeditated, saying he had ‘lost control of himself’ after an ‘immense amount of drink’.
Arguing sucsessfully that Torac shouldn’t be jailed for life, he said: “This series of offences are about as frightening an example of rape as one could expect to find. But when you take into account this man handed himself in to police and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, I can’t see what higher expression of remorse could be offered.”
Judge Robert Brown jailed Torac for eight years, with an extended licence period of eight years for the public protection.

Mohammed Imran, 38 of Bradford was sentenced to 19 and a half years and was told he “bore a substantial responsibility for (the victim’s ) prostitution”.
“I regard his involvement as the most cynical and harmful of all the defendants,” said the judge.
Vikram Singh, 45, of Aylesbury, received a 17-and-a-half year sentence, Asif Hussain, 33 of Milton Keynes, was sentenced to 13-and-a-half years, Arshad Jani, 33 of Aylesbury, to 13 years, Akbari Khan, 36 of Aylesbury, to 16 years and Taimoor Khan, 29 of Aylesbury, to three years.
During the trial the jury was told the ring had acted with "total disregard of the law and the legal prohibition on the sexual abuse of children".

Row: Judge John Bevan, QC, sitting at the Old Bailey raised concerns that the men, some of whom had lived in Britain for many years, genuinely needed the help of interpreters
One of Britain's top criminal judges suggested the right to an interpreter should be 'means-tested' after six Asian men were sentenced for abusing vulnerable white girls.
Judge John Bevan, QC, sitting at the Old Bailey raised concerns that the men, some of whom had lived in Britain for many years, genuinely needed the help of interpreters to understand court proceedings.
Paying for interpreters currently costs UK taxpayers millions, with fees soaring in recent years.
Providing the men with interpreters throughout the trial and for the sentencing hearing may have cost the taxpayer up to £50,000, he told the court.
Judge Bevan said: 'I have submitted a report elsewhere as to the necessity to independently test the means of using interpreters and whether a defendant who has lived here for many years requires or is entitled to an interpreter.'
He made the comments after six men of Pakistani and Indian origin were jailed for over 82 years after an eight-week sex abuse trial.
Four other Asian men were acquitted of similar charges. Throughout the trial interpreters were provided almost all the defendants.
'The use of interpreters by eight of the defendants had cost a minimum of £25,000, quite possibly double that,' the judge said.
One of the men in the trial granted an interpreter had lived in the UK since 1999.
The judge said the defendants were not to blame for 'taking advantage' of the services on offer, but questioned whether interpreters were required, given some of the men's backgrounds.
Figures released by the Ministry of Justice showed the interpreter bill last year was £17.2m, up from £12m in 2012/2013.
The services, provided by outsourcing firm Capita, come part of a £300m contract for face-to-face interpreting in court, translating legal documents and telephone interpretation.
Do you have the impression we are being conned
