Regular heatwaves 'will kill thousands'
The current heatwave could become the new normal for UK summers by 2040 because of climate change, MPs say.
The Environmental Audit Committee warns of 7,000 heat-related deaths every year in the UK by 2050 if the government doesn't act quickly. ......

Dean , could we have a special section on the heatwave?
It could be titled - ' Bugger Me, Its Hot'

there is nothing the government can do to stop it being sunny. you have a couple of weeks sunshine and think it is Armageddon. It's like that day in day out for 6 months or more here and no one pays a blind bit of notice. FFS if it is under 25C most turks will have a jumper on.fatbob5 wrote:The current heatwave could become the new normal for UK summers by 2040 because of climate change, MPs say.

If you want to remain cool in summer, buy a fan or an aircon. you can get portable aircons that will cool a couple of rooms for a few hundred quid. You can buy a decent fan for £30

Re: Regular heatwaves 'will kill thousands'
this year though has been unseasonally cloudy over the mountains, often with clouds blowing in in the afternoon. but it also means it has been cooler at night. So just enjoy your weather while you can as it is likely to be crap again very soon.
It seems to me that we have one of these very hot summers about every 20 years, 76, there was one in the 90's and again now, some might almost suspect a cycle.

In the last hundred odd years we had 6 heatwaves like the current one. 1911,1915,1942, 1952, 1961, 1976 and now, what is it 42 years since the last one? Seem to be getting scarcer on this info.

The weather is very odd. The seasons seem to be shifting and merging as well. Late short summers and long winters.
. What's happened to spring and autumn?

Re: Regular heatwaves 'will kill thousands'
I know memories are a bit iffy but as a child we lived in an old house with sash windows which I seem to remember being open to the half at least for sometime every summer and quite often for nearly the whole summer. The front door spent as much time wide open as well, didn't have a back door. It was at least warm enough not to need coats or even cardis or jumpers and sometimes it was very warm, it did rain of course. The last 10 or so years have been warm days here and there and very wet. We used to have no end of insects in the 'wild' garden and in the stone work of the wall and an old shed, we leave a portion at the top for the wildlife, you could hear the buzz when you passed it, the last few years there's hardly any insects at all.

Well everyone can stop moaning now about the heat, its been pissing down and freezing cold all day today.
Honestly the temperature has gone above 80 for a few consecutive days and anyone would think the end of the world was nigh. How are people going to die exactly? My Mom is 82 and cant stand the heat but guess what.... she stays in the house during the day where its cool.

My area was promised two days of rain, including heavy downpours, in the regional BBC weather forecast and over those two days my rain gauge managed to record, er, three mil.
The outdoor thermometer, by the way, hit 34 degrees - and that was not in full sun.

Nice breeze down on the beach today though.
Re: Regular heatwaves 'will kill thousands'
Yes we were promised torrential rain and thunder storms earlier in the week, I did see one very distant flash of lightening and we had about 3 spots of rain. Think the east coast got the worst of the storms.Lord Edmund Moletrousers wrote:

When i say "pissing down all day" I mean its just been drizzle but I am in a very bad mood because I have had to work outside in it all day And if i hear " the lawns need it" once more I am probably going to commit murder.
Anyway, that aside I just saw you have had surgery, hope you are recovering well and are taking full advantage of being waited on for a while.

I hate very hot weather, if it's cold you can put on more clothes, when your sweltering with the heat there's only so much you can take off. I have COPD, so I'v felt knackered for weeks.

Re: Regular heatwaves 'will kill thousands'
When I was growing up in the 70s, we lived in a big old house with no central heating an we coped unlike the wimps today who get cold playing computer games. And the summers seemed to be half decent and last a good while. But do you remember in 1975 it snowed in June then we had a heatwave. Just saying, freak weather an all that. I am worried about the insects though and birds. That is the bottom of the food change When that falters, we, re all toast!Flix wrote:I know memories are a bit iffy but as a child we lived in an old house with sash windows which I seem to remember being open to the half at least for sometime every summer and quite often for nearly the whole summer. Re: Regular heatwaves 'will kill thousands'
Yes I remember 1975 and what a summer we had in 1976.
I remember having torrential rain during the summer usually with thunderstorms, I don't know why people have to be warned about them.
I had a 20 min walk from the bus stop to my house when I first started work and still lived at home. One day in the summer the heavens opened while I was on the bus with some really crazy thunder and lightening, I think I made it home in record time and was just going through the gate when there was an almighty cap of thunder with lightening that I swear I felt the heat of on the back of my neck as I was bending over the gate to open it, I definately got in the front door in record time and although I had an umbrella I was soaked to the skin. Quite often the electricity would go off at such times we just got on with it.
